Vivisect are an old-fashioned death metal band from New Jersey.
They put out a new cassette earlier this year called Barbaric Death, and boy is it some down and dirty death metal with one hell of a strong rhythm section. With surprisingly long songs for a death metal band, the cassette rips through four tracks with the force of a category four hurricane.
Between the growling vocals, the furious chord pounding, and the killer guitar solos, it’s everything you love about classic death metal condensed into a four-track EP. The highlight of the cassette comes in the finale, “Extraterrestrial Proliferations,” which changes up tempos constantly to create a sense of barely bridled chaos.

E' fondamentalmente un'opera di "recupero" quella eseguita da Nihilistic Holocaust, che ha lanciato in formato cassetta questa raccolta intitolata "Barbaric Death", dei deathsters del New Jersey Vivisect. Nella fattispecie, sono presenti quattro pezzi in questa uscita: il singolo d'esordio "Prison Planet", seguiti da "Order of the Solar Temple" e "Rat Torture" presenti sia nel demo "Fuming Death" che nell'EP "Vivisect", ed infine "Extraterrestrial Proliferations" dallo split con Oxalate, Perpetuated e Blood Spore. Ma cos'è che abbiamo per le mani con questo "Barbaric Death"? Né più né meno che del più che discreto Death Metal sporco e grezzo che sembra uscire da uno di quei lavori dei 90's, con gli Autopsy come influenza assolutamente primaria. E quindi: vocione sporco e cavernoso, chitarre che rilasciano una colata lavica di riff ed una sezione ritmica che scandisce questo viaggio fatto di feroci accelerate e pesantissimi rallentamenti. Già solo a cominciare dal formato potrete capire come qui non troverete assolutamente nulla di moderno: solo ed esclusivamente una ventina di minuti di mazzate tra capo e collo, e con una produzione che ha volutamente il sapore del DIY. Magari "Barbaric Death" è un'uscita prettamente per i collezionisti, ma è anche un buon modo a nostro avviso per conoscere un nome nuovo di cui potremmo sentir parlare in futuro.

VIVISECT from New Jersey, USA was formed back in 2019 and since then, never stop reminding us about their filthy and putrid Death Metal. The formula of these New Jersey Death Metallers is quite simple which will remind anyone of the dirty and gnarliest essence of the 90s. And that is, mind possessing riffs and controlled blasts. Not too simple, not too technical – ‘just right the amount’ to keep anyone interested. “Barbaric Death” which is their newest compilation release contains four songs: the debut single ‘Prison Planet’, followed by ‘Order Of The Solar Temple’ and ‘Rat Torture’, both from the debut demo “Fuming Death” and in the EP “Vivisect”, and finally ‘Extraterrestrial Proliferations’ from their split with OXALATE, PERPETUATED and BLOOD SPORE. Although having surprisingly long songs for a Death Metal band, the cavernous vocals, tempting tempo variations and swiping guitar solos will give you twenty minutes of a trip into down and dirty Death Metal. Also each song structure with accelerations and slowdowns assuredly hints at their primary influences and should bring a smirk to any AUTOPSY fanatics. The crude production also did its parts to uphold the barbaric atmosphere it demands. Limited to 200 pro-pressed tapes and now released by Nihilistic Holocaust, this compilation will help to spread the name of VIVISECT that we might hear more often in the future.

Having just started in 2019, Vivisect is a relatively new band coming out of New Jersey and this 4 song, 20+ minute EP is essentially their discography so far across a few releases. Their music is not new though, it is old school stripped down dank, heavy and obscure sounding death metal that tends to keep things in the mid-pace and got my head nodding with solid brutish songwriting. Love the whispery growling vocals too. This is recommended for OSDM fanatics.  - Dale

Vivisect’s latest slab of old school death metal isn’t really anything new, but rather a compilation of what they’ve done so far since their inception in 2019. This New Jersey based group have a demo and EP out so far with 1 split and give fans a rather rare glimpse at their work in cassette form only (so far) on Nihilistic Holocaust in a gritty, packaged deal. It is only 4 songs so barely 20 minutes worth, but enough to give new listeners an idea of what these guys are about. Listeners who have followed them since the beginning will only want “Barbaric Death” if they are avid cassette collectors (which is making its way back into the world). Like the format it is in, expect late 80s/ early 90s style of very early Deicide meets Incantation with somewhat muddled production but some brutal grooves, especially with the opening chugs of ‘Prison Planet’ from their EP. It has a somewhat doom laden vibe to it but picks up pace with the riffs and drumming later and once can definitely hear the “Legion” influence. Slightly melodic but still brutal. Other tracks like ‘Order Of The Solar Temple’ have a thicker pulsing sound with the drums, guttural vocals that are a little bit muddled and buried as the bass and guitars seem pushed up in the front, but the whole recording process feels very live. And of course the groove is still unmistakable.
‘Rat Torture’ churns along with some slightly repetitive riffs, but it doesn’t quite become too much of a bore once the solos come in. A little less vocal heavy, this one gives listeners a chance to enjoy quite a bit of the drum sections which just hammer away almost in a thrashy, Vader-esque style. Finally there is ‘Extraterrestrial Proliferations’ which has a bit of a different sound to it than the others. More stripped down, more garage sounding, once can get more of very early Exhumed or Immolation here at a rather slower pace. Almost more of a sludge death metal piece, this one drags a bit but sounds the most varied compared to the others, even when it comes to the solos. While the quality is a bit rougher (especially in the vocal department) this track from their split album is probably the highlight of the album. Overall, older fans aren’t going to find anything new here, but new fans who like gritty old school 80s/ 90s death metal will find it appealing even if the vocals are very hard to understand. There is a lot of potential here listeners just need to hear more of it.

FATAL UNDERGROUND Zine:

Richtig geiler old school   Death Metal, der dann auch noch nen bissel nach Underground stinkt ,ist ja nun absolut nicht zu verachten .Wenn man dem Infomaterial der aus New Jersey stammenden Truppe dann uneingeschränkt Glauben schenken würde , dann gibt es mit den 4 Songs , die sich auf knapp 22 min . verteilen, hier ganz genau solch leckeres Material . Seit 2019 wandern die nun auch schon auf metallischen Pfaden, haben`s aber komischer Weise noch nicht geschafft, mal ein komplettes Album vorzulegen (bisher gabs nur ne Single, Demo, EP und ne Split ) .  Mit “ BARBARIC DEATH “ legt man nun ne Art von Compilation vor, auf der sich diverse Songs ihrer alten Veröffentlichungen befinden und mit der man den Versuch startet ,sich als Band auch international einen Namen zu machen . So rein vom Sound her kommt hier schon mal ganz gut Freude auf. Richtig schön old schoolig gehalten, ziehen die hier durchaus ganz gut einen ab und lassen absolut keine Zweifel daran aufkommen, dass deren Inspirationsquellen ganz eindeutig aus den tiefsten 90`ziger Jahren kommen. Aber bereits beim ersten Song wird recht klar, dass man seine Erwartungshaltungen dann doch nicht ganz so hoch schrauben sollte. Denn obwohl man hier durchaus ne recht gute dreckige und leicht morbide wirkende Atmosphäre aufbauen kann, wirkt ihre Mixtur aus Death Metal und leichten Thrash Metal Anteilen, nicht so wirklich überzeugend. Irgendwie mit nem leicht „rumplig“ wirkenden Charakter behaftet, zeigt man sich zwar schon recht brutal, aber eben auch ziemlich einfach gestrickt und wenig originell. Zwischendurch gibt es immer mal wieder ein paart kurze Dämpfer ,in dem man das Tempo doch auch drosselt und auch mal nen bissel was an kurzen Gitarrensolis ( erinnern mich recht stark an die Anfangszeiten von „Morbid Angel „ ) aufblitzen lässt .Kommt zwar so gesehen recht gut und wirkt vielleicht sogar teils etwas „abgefahren „ , lässt aber qualitativ gesehen ,noch sehr viel „Luft nach oben „ .Auch der Gesang , der hier irgendwo in den röchelnd grummligen Bereich geht ,wirkt dann eher echt monoton ,als überzeugend .Ehrlich gesagt ,haut mich das Teil hier nicht wirklich von den Socken ,da irgendwie kein wirklich richtiges geiles Feeling aufkommt ,welches die paar verbliebenen Haare in Rotation bringen würde. Die Momente, in welchen man hier dann tatsächlich sofort mal hellhörig werden kann, lassen sich tatsächlich an einer Hand abzählen. Für die totalen und absoluten old school freaks unter euch eignet sich das Teil sicherlich bestens dazu ,um ne eventuelle Lücke in der Sammlung ,mit ner unbekannten Bandveröffentlichung  zu schließen . Aber so großartig einen fetten Preis wird man hiermit sicherlich nicht gewinnen können. D.U. received a package from Nihilistic Holocaust Records from France and one of the releases inside was a cassette release from the U.S. band Vivisect.
The four-song tape, Barbaric Death, is a selection from a few different releases from the band—they proudly play ’90s-style death metal. One influence that sticks out in some of the riffs, it sounds like, is Testimony of the Ancients-era Pestilence. There’s different tempos of fast parts and plenty of crunchy slow parts and varied riff work to mix things up and keep things interesting.
The recording is clean (at different amounts depending on the song), the band shreds, and the riffs are nicely audible, and D.U. would say that if there’s an element that the band could improve upon, it’s the swampy death metal-type vocals. The band performs tightly, which works well for the material, and could benefit from more enunciation in the singing.
Barbaric Death is available on cassette, limited to 200, and Bandcamp.

Nihilistic Holocaust always guarantees a high-quality releases, and this time is no different. Vivisect is the band’s moniker, and Barbaric Death is their latest four-track EP. This old-fashioned death metal band hails from New Jersey, USA. Those four lengthy songs are gathered on a pro-casette in order to exhume the putrid and filthy sound of the 90s death metal. They come in the following order; “Prison Planet”, followed by “Order of the Solar Temple” and “Rat Torture” (both featured on the Fuming Death demo) and the closing one called “Extraterrestrial Proliferations” (from the split with Oxalate, Perpetuated and Blood Spore bands).
The first thing noticeable is the very strong rhythm section that is the main force in all four songs. Apart from that one can also hear mostly growling dirty vocals, furious pounding chords, killer guitar solos, destructively hammering drums, and overall a controlled chaos with some furious, but also ocassional slow-down moments.
I think that they’ve also nailed it with the production, as it is surprisingly fresh and quite pleasant to listen to all of the instruments. My personal favorite is the aforementioned final track called “Extraterrestrial Proliferations”, mostly due to the amount of variation and tempo shifts within a song. A nice ending to an overall very strong death metal release. Esp. recommended for worshippers of Autopsy, Atheist, Obituary and old school death metal fans with a penchant for the Florida scene will certainly adore it.
You can still get a copy of Barbaric Death, but don’t be late, the tape is limited to 200 copies and it’s almost gone.

GUTS OF DARKNESS Webzine

L'Est des États-Unis nous a tellement offert, nous les Français coincés entre nos quatre murs : une sorte d'eldorado qui fait vriller encore les mirettes, un destin, celui de coloniser un endroit lointain qu'on va trop facilement considérer comme une "terre d'opportunités" et en retour des fantasmes envahissants, des musiques plein la tête et des gratte-ciel dans le nez... et des groupes de death metal bien sûr ! Ici donc Vivisect, groupe du New Jersey : enclenchez le générique des Sopranos. La banlieue moche et un peu lointaine de New-York comme qui dirait, fief de Bon Jovi, mais aussi donc de Vivisect qui lui va plus arroser de laque vos yeux que vos cheveux, parce que ce Barbaric Death c'est du nanan pour les gusses comme moi qui ont besoin de brutalité grasse, simple et méchante. Cette cassette bien trop courte va vous faire voyager dans des terres connues, celles du bon son de quand on était jeune, enfin... jeune dans les années 1990, ça ne va peut-être donc pas parler à tout le monde, mais qui sait : ça va peut-être aussi donner aux plus jeunes l'occasion d'ouvrir une porte vers des contrées dégueulasses et violentes, et ça, ça n'a pas de prix non ? Le death metal, éternel corrupteur de la jeunesse. Voici donc quatre morceaux piochés dans des singles de leur début de carrière et c'est trop court mais ça me fait penser que le death c'est éphémère, les groupes sont traditionnellement instables et concourent, par leur rareté, à ce plaisir de dénicheur, on kiffe sa race sur trois quatre morceaux perdus dans les miasmes du temps et on sourit devant ces solos frustes, ce besoin de plomber l'ambiance et de ne pas se montrer sous son meilleur jour en balançant ces riffs lugubres et si réconfortants à la fois, la tronche cachée derrière une cascade capillaire. C'est ce qui arrive ici quand on mange cette cassette car j'ai beau me la passer encore et encore, je n'entends pas de faute de goût. Rampant, méchant, vintage, massif, cassant les tempos comme tout bon gros bourrin atteint de démence ou de délire stupéfié, cette petite compilation est juste ce qu'il vous faut pour se retaper un lundi qui est, comme vous le savez, le produit de l'aliénation sur nos âmes trop grandes pour être rangées dans des bureaux mal isolés et bien trop recouverts de moquette. Grise.

CABALE Webzine:

On peut être américain et pas forcément faire du brutal death core au logo illisible, monocorde et à la pince de crabe syllabique. VIVISECT jeune groupe du New-Jersey offre à qui veut bien l’entendre une compilation (déjà??) de morceaux écrits et sortis soit en digital, soit en cassette ultra limitée ou en split.
Et là « Barbaric Death », édition cassette chez Nihilistic Holocaust également propose 4 titres d’un death metal crade où les vocaux de Dan Sclavi ne viennent pas mettre de la lumière où il n’en faut pas.
Ça suinte la moisissure à travers les pores, les titres portent en eux l’essence du death metal des 90’s, voix sale, guitares putrides, la production est crade à souhait ce qui donne aux quatre titres de « Barbaric Death » un attrait monstrueux pour découvrir la musique de ce groupe.
Le death metal de VIVISECT fait ressortir quelque chose de primitif et réellement morbide, comme la plupart de tout ce qu’on a pu écouter au début des années 90’s.
Sur cette compilation on retrouve « Prison Planet » leur premier single, ainsi que « Order Of The Solar Temple » et « Rat Torture »,qui étaient sur la démo « Fuming Death » et sur le EP « Vivisect » sorti en 2020, et enfin « Extraterrestrial Proliferations » tiré de leur split avec OXALATE, PERPETUATED et BLOOD SPORE.
Tout comme des groupes tels que Morbific, VIVISECT réussit à écrire du death metal originel, où les guitares chantent la mort, tandis que les atmophères des morceaux sentent le rance et les fans des premiers Autopsy ou Obituary y trouveront certainement une fontaine de jouvence dans les ambiances des morceaux.
VIVISECT conserve à chaque fois la maîtrise de sa vitesse pour ne pas tomber dans la brutalité ultra condensée, au contraire ils jouent parfaitement sur les atmosphhères, en ralentissant constamment sans risquer d’arriver à quelque chose de death/doom, mais en y posant une patte extrêmement personnelle et putride, ce qui donne à tous les titres une saveur particulière.
Le dernier titre « Extraterrestrial proliferations » possède un son différent, nettement plus dégueulasse et old school que le reste car il amène l’auditeur totalement dans les bas fonds et les égoûts au milieu de la fange et des rats. Pourtant les guitares se veulent encore plus hurlantes, se rapprochant pas mal de l’esprit floridien d’il y a plus de trente ans en arrière.
Voici un groupe à suivre de très près pour ceux qui aiment encore et toujours le death metal dans son aspect d’origine. Parce que les américains de VIVISECT l’écrivent réellement bien et cette compilation qui regroupe quatre morceaux, permet d’avoir un aperçu du potentiel du groupe, même si l’on aurait préféré avoir quelque chose de plus conséquent.
Mais pour l’instant cassette pro et jaquette pro, ça donne envie de racheter un lecteur pour ceux qui n’en ont plus.
Les poilus, jettez vos oreilles dessus parce que c’est une tuerie.
