MORTIFEROTH:
... To the abyss Tape
ENCOMIUM Webzine Mortiferoth is an underground death metal entity that was formed back in 2015. "...To the Abyss" is their latest work, originally released in 2023 on vinyl by Hail Shitar Records. Now, thanks to the French underground label Nihilistic Holocaust, this 5-song EP has been released on cassette, a single-sided black tape with a sticker. The band defines their music as "thrashing apocalyptic death metal in the old school way". Well, they definitely are, but I'd classify them more as obscure death metal with a blackened edge, mainly because of the additional vocals. The EP was recorded by Jose Cabrera (guitars & vocals), Brian Hobbie (bass) and Steve Miller (drums & vocals). The almost 25-minute long material starts with the intro "Unholy Frequencies". It actually has some pretty annoying frequencies, ha-ha-ha..., but that's the way it should be. This is followed by "The Vatican's Elite", a pure death metal massacre in the old school style. By the way, this is the longest track on the EP, with over 7 minutes of crushing brutality, lots of tempo changes and great vocal arrangements. The third piece is called "Cosmic Winter". This song was already on their demo released in 2022. This is a mid-paced death metal cut with punchy double bass attacks. "Decay" is a faster song with great hammer blasts and some really catchy thrash metal riffs, it was also featured on "Demo 2022". The last song, "Retaliation of the Ancient Sorcerers", is all about groove and heavy riffs. It has short bomb blasts and cool solo parts, and is the second longest tune on the EP. The cassette is accompanied by a color J-card featuring Dick Lucas' excellent cover painting and all the useful information about the recording. I don't know what the limitation of this cassette release is, but if you like old school death metal, hurry up and get your hands on a copy as soon as possible!!!
CANADIAN ASSAULT Webzine: This band is from New York City and this EP release consists of four songs and an intro for around 25 minutes of music. Mortiferoth is a trio and features of note bassist Brian Hobbie (ex-Internal Bleeding, ex-Broken Hope). They play driving and furious old school death metal that has a enjoyable atmosphere across the whole warm sounding killer production. The vocal attack is a distinct dual vocals style, for me the growling voice is a bit so-so but still decent, the higher gurgling vocal style on the other hand is excellent. You really should check this out. - Dale
seit 2015 und spielen Old School Death Metal amerikanischer Prägung.
richtig geil!
VOICES FROM THE DARKSIDE Webzine: I first came across Brian Hobbie when “The Cleansing” by CATASTROPHIC was released. The highlights of the press release of that album was of course Trevor Peres and Keith DeVito of OBITUARY and PYREXIA and INTERNAL BLEEDING fame, with Hobbie as a side note. “The Cleansing” was a solid NYDM infused OBITUARY styled Death Metal album. CATASTROPHIC released a second album, which I don’t think I ever laid ears on. Luckily Hobbie didn’t put the bass down, and nowadays he roams in MORTIFEROTH. A band that hails from New York and has been around since 2015 releasing a good bunch of demos and EPs. The newest EP has been caught by French Nihilistic Holocaust, that have released “… To The Abyss” on tape. We are of course speaking Death Metal, Death Metal delivered with really smooth and catchy guitar riffs, solid mid paced rhythm patterns and a guttural growl latching on the groovy rhythms. The music is a solid mix of NY grooviness and the seamless flow of riffs that especially OBITUARY masters. Together with a state of ambience that IMMOLATION masters, just in a much lighter and nowhere as evil version on this EP. Production wise the EP lacks a bit of power and punch, I reckon the music with a powerful production would kick some serious ass. We have the riffs, the solos and the smashing rhythms. Songwriting wise the tunes are solid. The growl lacks some conviction to make the songs stand out, a more direct and powerful growl with some serious bottom would do wonders for the songs. The double growls on ‘Decay’ and ‘Retaliation Of The Ancient Sorcerers’ work really well, more of that spread around the tunes, please. And what a guitar solo on that last track, damn good stuff! That being written, it’s still a solid release with some good ideas and good execution. I think we will hear a lot more of MORTIFEROTH the coming years, the guys have some good things going on. BRUTALISM Webzine: Mortiferoth
hail from New York and have been tastefully devastating ears since
2015. While not a very large discography under their belt between
splits and EPs, they recently delivered a new EP entitled “...To
The Abyss” which builds on their mix of Thrash Death Metal and continues
to climb the rungs of the ladder for the title ‘cosmic Death Metal,’
although Blood Incantation still holds that title supremely. While
not as chaotically dissonant as the more renown band, Mortiferoth
create a different kind of chaos with their short 5 tracks here
but each one is a little different. Opening things up a bit more
atmospherically than their previous EP, ‘Unholy Frequencies’ draws
listeners in with some very noisy static and distorted hymn singing
that really brings in a sci fi feel before the Death Metal kicks
in fully.
(VEIT)

DISPOSABLE UNDERGROUND Webzine: Mortiferoth
is a death metal band from the U.S. with a five-song record of old-school
death metal. There’s lots of fast drums, fast guitar picking, and
double bass for the Incantation (and maybe the Deicide) fan, amongst
other bands. Once in a while there’s an upbeat part that sticks
out from the death metal the band paints with.

A w takim "The Vatican's Elite" słychać elegancko chamerykanów z MASSACRE (to rozbujane tempo i stąpające riffy kojarzą się jednoznacznie). Świetnie zabrzmiała ta zarzynająca wstawka gitary- niby pomysł z czapy, a efekt super! Tasiemca kończy "Retaliation of the Ancient Sorcerers"- prawie siedmiominutowy gigant rozkręcający się, jak najprawdziwsze tormado. Polecam. (8/10)
SLOWLY WE ROT Zine Mortiferoth was founded in 2015 by, among others, bassist Brian Hobbie, a founding member of Brutal Death Metal originators Internal Bleeding. Despite what one might expect from his past work, Mortiferoth label their music as “Thrashing Apocalyptic Death Metal in the old-school way”, a clear homage to the style that first drew them into extreme music, rather than an attempt to innovate or modernize it. The band have yet to release a full-length album, but over the past decade they’e maintained a steady underground presence with demos, a couple of EPs, and a compilation, clearly taking things at their own pace, in true DIY fashion. What I have here is their latest EP, “…to the Anyss”, a 4-track plus intro release clocking in at just under 25 minutes. True to their word, it’s unapologetically old-school Death Metal—mostly mid-tempo, occasionally pushing into faster territory—delivered with a clear, organic, almost live-sounding production. The guitar work is hard-hitting and whip-like, complex without becoming overly intricate, peppered with occasional leads and frantic solos that add a sharp edge. The rhythm section is heavy and commanding, while the vocals alternate between deep growls and high-pitched, distorted, vicious shouts, at times overlaping them. Musically, the EP balances stripped-down, primitive, in-your-face pounding with slower, darker, more menacing moments, enough variety to keep both purists and casual fans engaged. Initially released on vinyl in 2023, the cassette edition (my copy here) came out via Nihilistic Holocaust about half a year later, in 2024, complete with an 8-page booklet that unfrotunately doesn’t feature the lyrics. The cover artwork deserves a mention too: it’s the kind of striking, extreme visual that would have made me buy it on sight back in the ’90’s without knowing a single note of the music. All in all, for fans of true old-school Death Metal, this is a solid, uncompromising release that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, and doesn’t need to. My personal favorite is the closing and longest track, “Retaliation of the Ancient Sorcerers”, although its production isn’t the greatest, and if this is the direction Mortiferoth are heading, we can expect more good things from their camp in the future. WROTA KYPTY Webzine Mortiferoth
is death metal from Queens — cold, suffocating, like the air in
a sealed crypt. Formed in 2015, they’ve been playing as if every
riff was meant to bring down the sky. Dirty, musty sound with zero
modern polish. Mortiferoth isn’t just a band. It’s a ritual. A manifesto.
A reminder that death metal can still be dangerous. That it can
still reek of blood and basement mold. That it can still make you
feel like something just sank its teeth into your soul. Their latest
release, “…to the Abyss”, came out in 2023, and this review is dedicated
to that very work. |
