Herpes - Doomsday: This band make facile doom/death with underscorings of punk, shadowing early work by Autopsy and Cianide. They like to launch into songs with rough skeletal riffs, then develop those with their most grind/punk-influenced verse riffs, and then rotate through variations on that theme before concluding with a circuitous "descending into the dungeon" style resonant doom riff. This makes for an engaging mixture: just hookish enough to lure you in, twisted and cryptographic enough to keep your attention, but mostly these old school death metal tunes just immerse you in a dark atmosphere and then let it soak in, saturating you in a morbidity and empty despair that mirrors the purposelessness of modern life. Some influences from modern metal appear in the riffing but not in the song structure or tempi. Percussion is excellent and to these ears sounds solidly in the Chris Reifert tradition, both energetic and holding back just enough to keep the sensation of being in the midst of a dirge. This 2010 demo portends a bright future for these French old schoolers.

BRUTALISM Webzine (Hol)
The words `cult’ and `underground’ sprang to mind the moment I started listening to "Doomsday"; it’s certainly one the most barbaric and primitive demos that has ever crossed my path. Recorded by five French troglodytes in a dark, damp cave, this is the first ever release by Herpes. I guess up until now they were too busy gnawing on animal bones...
The words 'old-school' don’t really begin to define Herpes' sound; they play an incredibly raw, primitive and archaic form of death metal that can only be found at the very early, sludgy beginnings of the scene – it reminds me of bands like Impetigo, Autopsy, early Obituary, you can also hear a smattering of early Death in there.
For lovers of the lost art of dark, grisly and primitive death metal this is an immensely enjoyable romp; every track is bleak, heavy, crushing and full of that morbid atmosphere that satisfied so many extreme metal fans in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The production is definitely demo standard, but that’s not a negative point in this case – the guitars have a wonderfully sludgy sound, as though they have been dredged up from the bottom of a murky lake, and overall the sound is clear but dark and grim at the same time – people used to release albums that sounded like this! Admittedly, it is a little difficult to distinguish one track from another – the distinct lack of memorable melody is something that is both a blessing and a curse in this case. Five tracks is exactly the right amount of this kind of music – I think a full length album would become a rather monotonous, unless the band developed their music a little further.
There isn’t really a lot else to say – I enjoyed this 5 track demo and all its grisly offerings. I sincerely hope this band get round to making some more music soon. Like the disease, this band’s tunes are extremely infectious, and get under your skin pretty quickly!

Aaaaargh you were looking for some vintage and neandertalian death fucking metal and you just found it. "Doomsday" reeks of good old corpse putrefaction and is a gem of zombified blastbeat-free catchy metal of death with dark doomy parts, here we have five odes to the ancient and immortal spirit, think of AUTOPSY, MASTER, MASSACRE and ENTOMBED ! Not for every freak as this is punky as Hell, mid-tempo and dirty. And this is what I was craving for... ! Great stuff, you’ve been warned.

Yes.Herpes.The name,the band.Getting this little piece of French death metal from Gab and listening was giving me that uncertain secret feeling like receiving a not mindblowing,but simply good,nasty,obscure demo back in the early 90’s (coz it’s not always that fancy nowdays,I mean getting a new tape – replace it with cdr usually), done for joy or having a good time or something…certainly it’s that big deal,but a tasty and dirty occasionally doomed death metal with straightforward structures with obvious influences of Death Breath,Autopsy for being slow and also Impetigo occurred to me with some long,monotonous fast parts (‘you sick motherfucker’), plus lotsa grooves and an invisible punk feel,I dunno.Surely very contagious,as they call themselves.Anyway,the guys,especially Hans, one of the guitarist are increasedly handsome.

DIABOLICAL CONQUEST Webzine (India)
Herpes is a small and somewhat obscure death metal group out of France, and their first release, the Doomsday demo, is essentially a hands and knees down admiration of the almighty Autopsy. There really isn’t any hiding it – from the lumbering riffs, degenerate production and vomited vocals, Herpes do everything they can to relive albums like Severed Survival and Mental Funeral. Well, is this a good thing? It all depends on how much you like Autopsy, and how well you handle imitation. When it comes to the ‘new’ old school death metal movement, originality is not even a logical consideration, so it’s difficult to make any criticisms of Herpes when their recreation of the style is not an isolated act.
Ultimately, I really enjoyed Doomsday. This may be because I also really enjoy Autopsy, and while Herpes are certainly not the legendary San Franciscan group, their debut demo offers 5 hard-hitting and filthy death metal songs. The riffs are catchy, and, being a demo, it’s easy to just spin and re-spin the CD. It is somewhat unfortunate that the band do not go out on any limbs, but it’s far too early to make any sort of value judgements based on that – it’s only a self-released demo, and it’s entirely possible for Herpes to shape up with further releases, even without reducing the Autopsy worship. 

EQUIMANTHORN Zine (Slovakia)
Demo nahrávka „Doomsday“ o ktorej znovuvydanie sa postaral francúzsky label Nihilistic Holocaust je príjemným prekvapením. Títo mladíci, ktorých vznik možno len odhadovať s nepekne znejúcim menom sú na míle vzdialený novodobej forme Death Metalu. Obálka, ktorá sa mi pozdáva viac ako kazetové vydanie (o to sa postaral Carbonized Cells rec.) možno trochu i napovie...
Po spustení tohto mokvajúceho materiálu na Vás vyvalí Death Metal ako vytrhnutý z 90-tych rokov. Vokál Renauda sa mi až nápadne podobá na Martina Schirenca z rakúskeho necro tria Pungent Stench. Možno i práve preto mi je hudba kapely Herpes v niečom podobná materiálom na ich debute, či albume „Been Caught Buttering“. Herpes však narozdiel od nich využíva menej punkového rytmu, výraznejší sound a viac sólových gitár. Nepoľavujúce grindujúce gitarové tóny, vkusne kombinované s biciou artilériou sú dopĺňané spomaľovačkami. Počas týchto pasáží sa kapela snaží aspoň trochu oddýchnuť, aby následne implementovala do ich hudby zbesilé, thrashové sóla. Jednoduchá hudba, v ktorej miestami dôjde i k atmosferickejším pasážam, ako je tomu napríklad v „Stench of Decay“ alebo poslednej „Frozen Ritual“. „Spinal Ashes“ ako vlastne aj každá skladba je vhodná na rôzne alkoholické seansy, kedy budete texty piesní v delíriu kričať spoločne s Renaudom, haha!
Kapela Herpes v podstate nestvorila nič nové a objavné, zato tu cítiť poctu starým menám ako Pungent Stench, Autopsy, Benediction, s dávkou čierneho humoru.

Imagine old school metal in the Autopsy style, with more punkish/grind influences like Cianide. That's what you get with Herpes, which is old school death metal from France that keeps that "partially formed" feeling of early death metal, with the elements of punk, metal and grind separating like oil on water and then merging to form a singular sound.

FANNZIC Webzine (Fra)
Vous, oui vous qui aimez le death metal d’outre-tombe... “Doomsday” pourrait bien être pour vous ! Mais attention, seulement si vos oreilles n’ont pas oublié le bonheur de ce son écrasé et brut, et si vous ne jurez pas que par une prod énorme et monstrueuse. Parce que clairement, HERPES n’a pas là le son de Göteborg des années 2000, mais plutôt la saveur d’une démo de la fin des années 80, aux relents d’AUTOPSY, enregistrée avec brutalité et sueur de bière dans le fond d’un garage.
En vingt-deux minutes et cinq titres, ces joyeux français vont vous donner votre dose de riffs venant des abysses de l’accordage, des accélérations pouvant provoquer chez certains une forte crise de priapisme, et des retombées apocalyptiques dans les profondeurs quasi-doomesques. HERPES n’est probablement pas un groupe absolument incontournable, mais pour le plaisir que cette démo procure elle mérite de passer par votre platine. C’est peut-être une forme de nostalgie, mais regarder vingt ans en arrière et revenir dans sa jeunesse métallique, ça fait du bien ! Quoi qu’on puisse dire de la qualité sonore de “Doomsday”, l’esprit est intact, et rien que pour ça je les remercie.

FATAL UNDERGROUND Zine (Ger)
Da haben die fünf Franzosen nun nen mehr als super typischen Namen gewählt ,mit welchem man sich nun in die Spur macht ,auch international Anerkennung zu kriegen .Wie es der Name  vielleicht irgendwie schon vermuten könnte ,ziehen die mit ihren 5 gebotenen Stücken eine ziemlich Death Metal lastige Spur ,welche allerdings nun nicht wirklich ein totales vernichtendes Brett an den Tag legen . Obwohl man doch über weite Strecken ziemlich aus sich  rausgeht und schon deftiger in die Saiten greift ,gestaltet sich der gesamte Ablauf eher etwas schwermütiger ,teils schon recht Doom lastig .Hinzu komme dann noch nen ganzen Arsch voll an Riffs/Solis ,welche teilweise irgendwie schon wieder leicht psychedelisch/experimentell klingen .Im allgemeinen ist man auf jeden Fall verdammt old school angehaucht ,wobei man sicherlich mit den in der Werbung verwendeten Vergleich zu  AUTOPSY ,gar nicht mal so daneben liegt .Der ganzer Sound ist jedenfalls schon so richtig schön roh und dunkel ,wobei man sich hierbei dann aber  vom Songaufbau eher recht einfach darstellt .Da findest du kaum irgendeine Stelle , welche auf wirklich enorme große technischen Fähigkeiten hinweist .Trotz des eher verdammt einfachen Charakters der Stücke ,kommt die Mucke  noch ganz gut rüber und hat so ne gewissen Charme ,welcher dich letztendlich doch dazu bringt ,auch nen zweites mal die Play Taste zu drücken .Rein aufnahmetechnisch sollte man aber auch hier nicht wirklich nen super wuchtige  Angelegenheit erwarten .Klingt alles eher etwas dünner ,wobei insbesondere den Drumms die nötige Härte & der Druck völlig fehlen .Fans der ganz alten Death Metal  Schule werden mit dem Teil sicherlich absolut keine Probleme haben ,zumal es neben der CD Version auch ne Demotapeversion gibt. "Az ajkat, a szájnyálkahártyát, a fej és a felsőtest bőrét a herpes labialis, a nemi szerveket a herpes genitalis vírus támadja meg. Ezek a vírusok az egészséges emberek bőrén és nyálkahártyáján is megtalálhatóak. Betegséget általában a szervezet legyengülése idején okoznak. Gyakori, hogy a betegség lázas állapotban, gyomorrontáskor, kimerültség ill. menstruáció idején jelentkezik. Ugyanakkor vannak akiknél egyéb betegség nélkül is megjelennek a herpeszes bőrtünetek. A herpesz többnyire ártalmatlan megbetegedés, viszont makacsul visszatérő, többnyire fájdalmas ezért meglehetősen kellemetlen."
Herpesz, igen, igen! Bizony jól olvasod, van ilyen nevű formáció, s a tréfa kedviért el kell, hogy mondjam; nem is csak egy ilyen krónikus elváltozás létezik (mint névválasztás tárgya), természetesen mind death metal, mi is lehetne más egyéb? Mondjuk gore, vagy grind… Na, de mi most a lorrainei hordával ismerkedünk, a demóig már eljutottak, s bizony a franciák soha se voltak hiányában a betegségnek, erre jó példa ez az old school death horda is, avagy morbid névhez morbid muzsika dukál. Számozott fénymásolt borító és írott CD, a háttérben G.S. - aki ha nem ilyen muzsikákat küldene, talán haragudnék is rá, hiszen mindig öröm a kis nonprofit kiadó által némi undergroundot engedni az életembe, olyan csapatokat, melyekkel amúgy soha se ismerkednék meg, főleg nem ilyen nevűvel, ennyire kellemetlen képződménnyel, mint a Herpes.
Mint már említettem a mindössze öt nótás demó a régi sulis death metal szerelmesinek kedvez, hiszen a korai halál fémek hatáselméletei sorakoznak itt szépen fel egymás után: Pathology, Autopsy, Unleashed, korai Brutality és Entombed, néhol egy kis Repulsion hasonszőrű emberevő társaik (avagy néhol a grind alapok is érzékelhetőek, de csak kiegészítik a csoszogó fémet). A zenei tudás kielégítő, bár lehetnének jobban is urai hangszereiknek, ám alapvetően ez a lesarkított romlottság jól áll nekik, a hangzás is kellően régies, a pergők és a tamok hihetetlenül tompák, az ének előtérben van, a riffek meg zúznak és hasítanak. A témák egy nagy része mellesleg középtempós, de igazán lassú leállásokat és szélsebes ütlegeléseket is kapunk, s ahogy megszokhattuk már a doomos cammogás néhol thrashes repítésekkel, punkos hempergésekkel és éles szólókkal egészülnek ki. Az összkép hatásos és kellemes a maga zenei berkei és a csapat nevének jelentésén belül.
Végezetül nem tudok mással zárni, hogy ne lőjem ezt a morbid tréfát, hogy ezt a fajta herpeszt kapjad el, tombolj rá, mint azt amelyik az ajkadra nő és megkeseríti a mindennapjaid, fátyolba és krémbe passzírozza a csókot, elbassza a romantikát és kiközösít az gruppen partykról! 8,8/10

Tu sais ce qu'on dit ? Tu bois pas de verre, t'as l'air con... tu bois un verre t'as l'herpes...
Herpes, groupe français originaire de Lorraine, joue du death à l'ancienne pas la peine d'aller chercher du blast, pas la peine d'aller chercher du death technique, ici c'est un death traditionnel crasseux, vomissant et tuméfié, et comme le soulève effrontément Gab de Nihilistic, c'est dans la veine d'Autopsy.
A l'origine sorti sur Carbonized Cells Recs, petit label underground français également, en format K7, c'est sous l'égide de Nihilistic Holocaust qu'Herpès ressortira donc cette demo en format CD.
Le titre de cette demo est sans doute un hommage à une époque passée où il était de bon ton de posséder les compilations CD ou video de "Doosmday News" où on retrouvait régulièrement les maitres du thrash Coroner, ou encore Tankard, Kreator, Celtic Frost... d'ailleurs la tronche sur la pochette de Herpes, est un peu dans le trip de l'époque et ressemble étrangement à celle de ladite compilation.
Le logo, quant à lui, est représentatif du côté traditionnel de Herpes, du côté thrash / death des 15 glorieuses florissantes de groupes à la Nihilist, Repulsion et j'en passe, des groupes putrides dans leur death métal au sens large. Je dis au sens large parce qu'Herpes, reste dans le death, mais c'est mitigé, si les ambiances sont nauséabondes, les riffs principalement death, arrivent quand même à la limite du thrash, quand ce style n'en n'était encore qu'à ces balbutiements et que la transition était en cours.
Le gros  des morceaux, se base sur des atmosphères morbides, comme "Stench Of Death" où la lenteur apporte l'amas purulent musical que veut reproduire Herpes à travers ces quatre titres.
Les influences principales sont effectivement des trucs à la Autopsy, peut-être d'autres choses comme Carnage, en tous les cas une musique death grasse et lourde un peu punkisée...
C'est du vieux death avec toute la culture qui va avec.
Le son ressemble à une vieille répète dans la cave du coin, où la batterie, du moins la grosse caisse est assez sourde, où les guitares sont sincères, sans qu'il y ait quoique ce soit qui ait été retravaillé après. Même la voix est directe, point d'effet ou de doublage... Du crasseux à souhait... On a l'impression qu'on assiste à une répète effectivement , sans fioriture ni artifice...
Alors Herpes joue 22 minutes d'un death morbide, très old school, à la manière de groupes dont les noms sont devenus cultes aujourd'hui mais pour lesquels certaines têtes blondes à mèches n'en n'ont jamais entendu aucune note finalement. La voix de Renaud, surtout sur "Doomsday", me rappelle un peu celle de  Paul Speckmann, parce que ces intonations sont proches de "Pay To Die", sur l'album éponyme "Master", sorti en 1991. Après bien qu'il n'y ait pas forcément de passages ultra rapides, cela n'empêche pas le groupe d'avoir de bonne accélérations sur "Spinal Ashes", où l'atmosphère lugubre se fait trancher dans le lard par du bastonnage de rue en ordre serré. Ceci étant coupé par une éructation  magnifique à 3mn56, par je ne sais par quel membre / goret de l'équipe...
Herpes colle aux doigts, comme la MST colle à la peau ; Herpes a la capacité de se transmettre aisément parmi les fans qui arborent encore fièrement les couleurs de la old school sincère et underground.
Si le son avait été tout de même relativement meilleur, je pense que cela aurait été parfait... peut-être pour la suite... j'aime bien. 13,5/20

FRIEDHOF Webzine (Spa)
Poco se sabe de esta banda francesa que da ahora sus pasos iniciales con la que es su primera maqueta, una grabación que por cierto había sido editada originalmente en casete por parte de Carbonizad Cells Records en el mes de abril (y que aún se puede encontrar a la venta en su página de internet en este formato pero con una portada casi infantil diferente a la del disco compacto). El caso es que se trata de un quinteto que le pega al Death Metal de la vieja escuela, pero vieja viejísima, porque han retrocedido hasta la época más arcaica, rocosa y ruda de los inicios del estilo; tanto que se podría engañar a alguien haciéndole creer que se trata de una grabación de finales de la década de 1980.
Con estas bases y más teniendo en cuenta que se trata de una maqueta es evidente que no cabía esperar ningún lujo a nivel de sonido, aunque lo cierto es que este hecho lo han llevado al extremo y resulta realmente pobre, quién sabe si de manera consciente o no. Es cierto que el underground tiene su encanto y hay grupos que ganan precisamente cuando no suenan a las mil maravillas y se muestran más auténticos, pero otro tema aparte es cuando las limitaciones tanto a nivel interpretativo como de producción son tan insalvables que un grupo resulta amateur en el sentido más cutre y salchichero de la palabra. Tanto que esto casi parece un ensayo grabado.
Si desean abrirse un hueco y que los oyentes y los sellos se fijen en ellos muchos aspectos tendrán que mejorar porque en esta maqueta dan una sensación de principiantes y de inexpertos que les hace un flaco favor. Hace falta más trabajo, más habilidad y al menos una o dos maquetas más para poder llegar a algo.

IMPERIUMII Webzine (Fin)
Kuumottavalla nimellä paiskattu ranskalaisyhtye esittää ilmeisesti ensimmäisellä demollaan tyylinsä puolesta varsin perinteistä ja vanhakantaista death metalia. Rumaa ja yksinkertaista möyrintää suoltava tautilainen ei kuitenkaan nouse esiin sen enempää tasonsa puolesta kuin muutoinkaan.
Neljän biisin demo on uusintajulkaistu cdr-formaatissa Nihilistic Holocaustin toimesta, mutta mustavalkoisilla kansilla tekele varusteltu henkii eittämättä melkoista diy-henkeä, kuten on myös itse musiikin laita. Reipasta keskitempoa tykittävä lärpäke lähtee heti alussa siihen menoon, johon se lopulta myös hyytyy. Toisin sanoen, yhtyeeltä odottaa alun jälkeen tiukempaa vääntöä ja raskaampia riffejä, mutta meno jää kovin vaisuksi yritelmäksi. Jopa hitaat kohdat tuntuvat vain "ihan ok" -tason yritykseltä. Aivan kuin bändi olisi päättänyt poimia 80-luvun klassikoilta vain ne huonoimmat täyteriffit.
Doomsday ei ole toivoton. Paremmilla soundeilla, vihaisemmilla laulusuorituksilla ja tiukemmalla biisintekoruuvilla lopputulos todennäköisesti kuulostaisi melkoisesti toisenlaiselta. Nyt pehmeät kitarasoundit yhdessä krapulaisen ärähtelyn kanssa jäävät sellaiselle "njoo, tämähän on kuultu aiemminkin" -tasolle, joskin plussaa on annettava Isengard-henkisille syntikoille. Nykytarjonnan valossa tällainen setti jää kuitenkin armotta brutaalimman, tummemman tai raaemman setin varjoon. 

LA HORDE NOIRE Webzine (Fra)
HERPES : Pathologie, éruption cutanée ou muqueuse, due à un virus et récurrente, en bouquets de petites vésicules vitreuses sur une base enflammée. Telle est la définition que l’on trouve dans le dico, quelle douce appellation pour un groupe! Ce boys band originaire de la Lorraine sort là sa première démo intitulée Doomsday en format k7, alors toi, jeune trou du cul, pose ton iphone mp3 et sort le magnéto de ta grand-mère pour pouvoir poser une oreille dessus ! HERPES, c’est gras, c’est lourd, ça sent les dessous de bras (et la bière) bref c’est old school ! 5 morceaux proches des premiers ENTOMBED et autre AUTOPSY, Doomsday, c’est 22 minutes pendant lesquelles on se dit qu’on est content d’avoir mis la main dessus. Doomsday est le genre de cd à mettre en soirée entre potes autour d’un whisky car son contenu est plutôt soft et ne viendra en aucun cas vous brutaliser les conduits auditifs. Bien sûr, rien n’est parfait dans ce monde, donc soyons honnête : quels éléments ai-je aimé et, au contraire pas aimé à travers cette démo ? Tout d’abord, j’ai apprécié le son que l’on retrouve en répète, la gratte et la basse sont bien mises en avant sans pour autant avoir un son daubé. Le caractère plutôt simpliste des compos m’a à la fois plu et un peu gonflé car d’un côté, on ne se prend pas la tête et d’un autre, la linéarité des morceaux peut provoquer un emmerdement chez l’auditeur. Autre point sur lequel je n’irai pas faire d’éloge, c’est le chant, car ce type de vocaux rappelant NUNSLAUGHTER ou les premiers SEPULTURA ne me fait pas plus vibrer que ça. Les solos venant habiller certains titres sont plutôt bien réussi, il faut l’avouer, on en viendrait à taper du pied tel un hippie défoncé à l’acide! Ces conq titres sont au final bien, sans pour autant correspondre à une totale boucherie. J’attends un futur premier album pour revoir mon jugement à la hausse (ou à la baisse). A écouter au moins une fois…Maxtician - 05/10 

LORDS OF METAL Webzine (Hol)
Herpes from France don’t try to hide that they are hugely influenced by the fabulous Autopsy when you listen to this five-song mcd. On every level they try to imitate the American legends. I don’t have any problems with that when it’s done with some sincerity and I get the idea that this band is okay in that department. Of course they can’t beat the masters when it comes to quality. The productions might have been a bit more heavy and ballsy but other than that this is just a death metal band that pays tribute to their heroes in their won way. 

METAL COMMAND Zine (Ger)
Autopsy, Autopsy und verdammt noch einmal Autopsy! Das fällt mir sofort beim Hören dieses arschgeilen Fünf-Track-Demos, das auch schon zwei Jahre auf dem Buckel hat, ein. HERPES, eine fünfköpfige Horde aus dem Land der Renaults und Baguettes, rödeln und poltern genauso barbarisch und urwüchsig durch die Walachei wie ihre offensichtlichen amerikanischen Vorbilder und hinterlassen nach knapp 23 Minuten nichts als verbrannte Erde! Man nehme den Sound assiger Teppichklopfer-Drums, morbides, kaputtes Geröchel in bester Chris Reifert-Tradition, bis zum Anschlag herunter gestimmte Gitarren, dazu noch ein paar obligatorische Doom-Parts, um seinem Schädel eine kurze Verschnaufpause zwischen den Blast-Attacken zu gönnen und fertig ist der zerstörerische Todes-Cocktail. Wer hier nicht zwangsweise mit der Rübe schüttelt, der hat den wahren Death Metal nicht verstanden! Her mit dem ersten Langeisen, ein weiteres Demo ist in der Zwischenzeit ja schon erschienen! Die (wiederveröffentlichte) CD-R über Nihilistic Holocaust kommt mit schwarz-weiß kopiertem Cover bzw. Inlay und einem klischeebeladenen Splatter-Cover 8,5/10

METAL FEDERATION Webzine (Fra)
Herpes ... Nom de groupe tout à fait poétique pour ces cinq trve tout droit venues de Lorraine et l'élitisme trve ne s'arrête pas là ! Tout est respecté, sortie sous forme de tape à la base, artwork photocopié en noir et blanc sur du banal papier.
Comme l'artwork, comme le nom, la musique d'Herpes rentre dans le tas ! Le son d'Herpes ce n'est pas la vésicule verdâtre qui a grossit pendant trois semaines dans l'entre jambe de mamie Jaqueline avant d'éclater et de répandre sa liqueur dans la pilosité humide de celle-ci, non ! La musique d'Herpes ce n'est que l'explosion de celle-ci au rythme d'une kalachnikov pendant la guerre du Vietnam !
Les lorrains ne réalisent donc ici aucune prouesse technique ni conceptuelle mais nous offre une démo rentre dedans sentant fort l'herpes, les dessous de bras, la bière et la crasse ! La scène métal française est sûr de bons rails.

METAL FRANCE Webzine (Fra)
Pendant les vacances je me suis abreuvé de la lecture d’un ouvrage que je conseille à tout les amoureux de metal extrême et qui se nomme : CHOOSING DEATH L'histoire du death metal et du grindcore, par Albert Mudrian.
Mon collègue niklas, dit de cette ouvrage, je cite : « c'est basé sur des des témoignages interviews de musiciens, programmateurs radio de l'époque, producteurs etc.. ca sonne vraiment authentique! Ce qui m'a beaucoup plus c'est que la grande majorité du bouquin est consacrée à la naissance de ces deux cousins! Et on ressent vraiment comment les mecs on ressenti le truc à ce moment là, et puis suivre l'évolution jusqu'à nos jours est vraiment prenant! »
Tout cela pour vous parler d’Herpes groupe originaire de lorraine ! J’aime leur démarche car ils jouent du death metal old school, celui des origines, ce qui m’a beaucoup rappelé ce que j’avais lu dans l’ouvrage que je cite plus haut. Ils ont, entre autre comme influences des combos tels que : Entombed, Autopsy!
Leur démo 5 titres est pétrie de « vieille école » ; d’abord le son, c’est celui d’une k7 comme on en faisait à cette époque : un son sourd, poussé dans les graves qui restitue avec fidélité le mix de jadis : cela transpire la véracité ! J’aime ce son huileux comme extirpé de ce qu’il y a de plus gras dans l’âme humaine.
Ensuite, les riffs : simples, accordés bas, qui puisent leurs racines dans du doom, du death d’antan et du heavy noir, sombre, plombé ; On y sent, un peu comme dans un vieux Unleashed, l’influence des pères du metal, Black Sabbath !
Bref, ce n’est pas hyper technique, ce n’est en aucun cas novateur, bien au contraire, c’est juste un retour dans le passé qui ravira les ultra puristes du genre et qui me fait dire que les années passent, mais que, comme pour le thrash old school, ou le hard rock à la sauce ACDC époque Bon Scott ( mes styles de prédilection) , les jeunes générations ont soif de se ressourcer aux origines, et cela avec sincérité.
Je vous le dis tout haut les gars, le metal a une histoire, et on y retourne sans cesse, histoire de puiser dans l’angoisse ou le plaisir immédiat à l’état pur! 

METAL REVOLUTION Webzine (Den)
Herpes; what a fabulous name for a metal band?! This Herpes is a five-piece death/grind metal band that comes from Lorraine (France). The band is definitely not trying to hide the fact that their main inspirations are from Autopsy.
Doomsday is this quintet’s latest MCD offering, containing only five songs in the best old-school death metal style. This demo was initially released on tape by Carbonized Cells Records.
It is obvious that Herpes is still not on the same level as legendary Autopsy, but I like their sincere, honest and old-school approach. The overall quality of this record is good, even though the production could have been a bit heavier and clearer. Still, this is only a death/grind release and everything was done with underground intentions. Despite of the fact that we are dealing here with brutal and extreme death metal, this release has the overall atmosphere that is misanthropic and almost depressive. In other words; it will also appeal to the black metal souls.
Doomsday can be highly recommended for those who like Autopsy, Murder Squad, Death Breath, Vomitory, Entombed, Repulsion and such. 66/100

Hahaha, I’ve got Herpes! Hehehe. I’m so fucking funny.
Herpes is a French five-piece and this is their first release, as far as I know. “Doomsday” contains five tracks of putrid old school Death Metal infestation. The music is mid-paced to slow primitive Death Metal with some faster moments. It reminds me a lot of Autopsy, and to some extent it also reminds me of Death, the slower parts. All with a bit of that Swedish sound and execution. This is really good, the music is raw, dark and utterly ugly. If you are looking for old school Death Metal you have to check out Herpes.  

MORBIDIOUS PATHOLOGY Zine (Pol)
Pozwoliłem sobie onegdaj stwierdzić (co prawda wyłącznie w ramach małej prowokacji „wywiadowczej”, ale mimo wszystko), iż Francuzi to nacja zmanierowanych bawidamków, którym (z nielicznymi wyjątkami) brakuje jaj, aby łoić konkretny Metalowy wyziew. Jakby tego było mało, dodałem również, że scena francuska prezentuje się dość mizernie. Naturalnie było w tych zaczepkach sporo przekory mającej w rezultacie doprowadzić mojego adwersarza do „wrzenia”, ale generalnie rzecz biorąc jeśli spojrzeć na tę sytuację z perspektywy czasu okaże się, iż w ostatnich kilku latach pobratymcy Bonapartego odnotowują wręcz niewiarygodną eksplozję naprawdę klasowych kapel, które bez większych problemów wpisują się w poczet załóg skutecznie przykuwających atencję maniaków różnego rodzaju ekstremy. Wspominam o tym rzecz jasna nieprzypadkowo, ponieważ Herpes także może poszczycić się francuskim pochodzeniem, jak również jest w stanie zwrócić (przynajmniej moim zdaniem) uwagę oddanych czcicieli rasowego... Death Metalu! Słuchając „Doomsday” nie sposób nie dojść do przekonania, iż autorzy tego materiału muszą być wręcz maniakalnie zafascynowani twórczością Reiferta & Co., gdyż wpływy Autopsy nader wyraźnie odbijają się w dokonaniach tych obłąkanych Francuzów. Do tego dorzućmy jeszcze lekkiego świra na punkcie wczesnego Death i wypisz wymaluj mamy „Doomsday”, który stanowi zresztą nie tylko swoisty hołd dla wspomnianych weteranów zza oceanu, ale i udaną wizytówkę Herpes, bowiem mamy w tym przypadku ewidentnie do czynienia z bezwzględną muzyczną surowizną, dźwiękową zagładą czy wręcz Śmierć Metalowowym apogeum ku chwale rozkładu, bestialstwa i perwersji zamkniętym w nieco ponad 22 minutach bezpardonowego Death Metalowego łojenia. Pierwszy muzyczny krok Francuzów w postaci „Doomsday” od początku do końca emanuje tą obłędną, chorobliwą atmosferą zatęchłego grobowca wpisaną w to mało finezyjne i niezbyt wyszukane grzańsko oparte na nieco topornych (acz miażdżących!) riffach, schizofrenicznych „solówkach”, stosunkowo prostej (ale morderczo skutecznej!) grze „fizycznego” oraz wzor(c)owych poczynaniach zwyrodnialaca stojącego za mikrofonem. Oczywiście jestem w stanie przychylić się do stwierdzenia, iż piętno psychopatów mających na koncie chociażby „pomnik” w rodzaju „Severed Survival” zostało odciśnięte na twórczości Herpes na tyle mocno, że bez większych obaw można określić ich mianem niepoprawnych naśladowców, jednak Francuzi odgrywają te patenty tak naturalnie, iż swoją bezceremonialnością w drobny mak rozgniatają niezliczone rzesze im podobnych muzycznych apologetów ekipy z Kalifornii. Herpes udało się wręcz bezbłędnie uwypuklić tę obezwładniającą zgniliznę i przyprawiający o zawroty głowy, oszałamiający trupi odór sączone z każdym kolejnym dźwiękiem wypełniającym „Doomsday”. W głównej mierze mamy do czynienia z typowymi średnio-wolnymi tempami pozwalającymi do woli delektować się smrodem rozkładu, jednak i przetrącających kark przyśpieszeń na tym wydawnictwie nie brakuje, więc powodów do narzekań nie ma absolutnie żadnych, ponieważ właśnie w części tych szybszych fragmentów muzycy Herpes ukazują swoje niemałe uwielbienie również dla załogi Schuldinera z okresu do „Scream Bloody Gore” włącznie – posłuchajcie chociażby, co się dzieje w tytułowym „Doomsday” czy też zamykającym „Frozen Funeral”. Teoretycznie Francuzi nie oferują kompletnie nic nowego, a jednak w ich muzyce bez wątpienia tkwi to wymykające się wszelkim próbom definicji „coś” nijak nie pozwalające oderwać się od muzyki Herpes przez długi czas – nawet jeśli momentami można mieć pewne, drobne zastrzeżenie do brzmienia „Doomsday”. Dla mnie bomba!          Z mojej strony pełna rekomendacja

MROCZNA STREFA Webzine (Pol)
Stare dobre AUTOPSY odcisnęło swoje niewątpliwe piętno na francuskim HERPES. Słychać to przez większą część trwania ich demówki pt. "Doomsday". Praktycznie całość jest do szpiku kości przeżarta kwasem grobowego, ohydnego death metalu z początku lat 90-ych, ze wskazaniem właśnie na ekipę dowodzoną przez Chrisa Reiferta. Cytaty z wczesnej twórczości tego zacnego amerykańskiego składu są tu może nie dosłowne, ale bez wahania można je odczytać z podobnie budowanych utworów i grobowego brzmienia, pracy gitar, basu i perkusji, buldogowatych wokali, doom'owych zwolnień, a nawet zbliżonych rozwiązań w gitarowych smaczkach i solówkach. Brakuje temu nieco lepszego soundu, bo chwilami nagranie naprawdę wygląda na zarejestrowane w sali prób, bez jakichkolwiek studyjnych nakładek i poprawek. Ma to swój niewątpliwy urok, lecz obawiam się, że może stać się przeszkodą dla wielu fanów przyzwyczajonych do ciut lepszej, czytelniejszej produkcji nagrań. Chociaż ja jestem akurat przekonany, że do takich ludzi "Doomsday" nie jest kierowane, a ten rodzaj brudu i obskurności dźwięku ma z pewnością przypomnieć o tym, co zagubiono przez ostatnie kilkanaście lat w metalu, cyzelując każdy dźwięk na sto sposobów i wzorując się na gwiazdkach popu, a nie najlepszych w ciężkim gatunku. Przyznam jednak, że za kilka tysięcy, a być może tylko kilkaset godzin wypełnionych ciężką pracą w rehearsing room HERPES ma szansę wyrosnąć na klasowy zespół, właściwie rozumiejący ducha starego, apokaliptycznego death metalu. Już teraz polecam wsłuchać się w numery "Corrupted Flesh", "Doomsday" czy "Frozen Funeral". A notę obniżam głównie z powodu braku oryginalności.

MY LAST CHAPTER Webzine (Denmark)
I’ve had some mixed relations with Gab and Nihilistic Holocaust as a label. Sure, the guy’s released some cool stuff, and he definitely promotes the hell out of them, giving band’s demos way more attention than they’d normally get. But he’s also released some shitty and semi-shitty stuff, mostly in the thrash department. So that means I don’t always trust his judgment, and hence couldn’t be certain of what I was about to endure when putting on Herpes for the first time. It’s their debut demo, but I’m quite certain they’ll have some proper release out soon.
As soon as the first grunt and churn of the guitar comes through the speakers the Autopsy influence is blatantly obvious. It actually reminds me of a couple of friends who are so hung-up on the band it seems no matter what style they go for it still sounds like Autopsy. Thankfully, Herpes doesn’t sound like a complete copy cat, but truth be told it’s not too damn farfetched of a thought. Taking a track like Stench of death we have that typically sludgy, doom-ridden slowmotion brutality we’ve all come to link said band with. The heavy, thundering riffing, the drum tempo as well as the style of growling all goes back to the same act. Hell, even the murky production is reminiscent of Autopsy.
But it all comes down to whether or not Doomsday is any good, and it is. The short and weird keys in Frozen funeral is supreme, the heavy-as-shit and sludgy riffing is great, just as the vocals sound solidly stoned and drunk. It’s certainly not the most unique stiff I’ve ever heard, but it’s densely delivered and actually makes quite an impact due to the powerful material presented. Be it the faster sections that never fully reach blastbeat or the ultra-slow parts that seem to drag its feet in the mud forever, Herpes seem to be on to something here.
I’ve never been as sold on this particular band (I refuse to mention their name again, I’ve done so far too many times in one review already) as some people, so to me the similarities aren’t painful to endure. Fact is this is quite a charming demo of raw and degenerate death metal, one I’m sure will appeal to the utter Autopsy fanatics out the. Ok, so I mentioned their name again, but it had to be done. 6,5/10

MYSTICAL MUSIC Zine (Ger)
Man, I guess grandpa Mr. Reifert would be pleased if he notices that his musical hertiage still causes trouble with bands like Finland’s SWALLOWED or HERPES from France. “Doomsday” is in deed a nice sick & disgusting debut demo hold in the ugly old way and packed with tons of reminders to AUTOPSY (in first line!), REPULSION, DEATH BREATH and IMPETIGO. It’s something quite common these days to pack some old bands on your list of refrences, but HERPES manged to hit a sort of positive feeling with it. This a non bullshit “fan of the music” type of release. The sound itself is actually still too polished to match the real ugliness & sickness of the originals, but there are some nice moments that remind of you to the gods of primitive Death Metal art. There’s still work to be done by HERPES in terms of keeping their sound/recording more real & brutal, but you hear that they enjoy what they do! Conclusion: Nice but still with room for improvements. NECROSLAUGHTER Webzine (Ger)
Wird der G vom Nihilistic Holocaust etwa modern? Die neueste Veröffentlichung über das kleine französische Undergroundlabel ist das “Doomsday“-Demo von HERPES – auf CDr! Vielleicht hat der Gab das Teil aber auch nur auf Scheibe rausgebracht, weil es zuvor bei Carbonized Cell Records als Tape veröffentlicht wurde…
Nichtsdestotrotz zeigt sich Kopf hinter Nihilstic Holocaust wieder in bekannter Hochform mit seinem Händchen für qualitativ hochwertige Oldschool-Kapellen! HERPES spielen groovigen und teilweise schön rumpligen Death Metal in wirklich bester Autopsy-Manier! Warum sollte die Band sich an Blastbeats versuchen, wenn poltriges Uptempo einfach nur mörderisch-morbiden Groove erschafft? Und die simplen, aber sehr effektiven Riffs tragen nur dazu bei, dass diese obskuren Nummern ohne Probleme in einem Atemzug mit der mittlerweile reaktivierten Kapelle vom Reifert genannt werden kann! Selbst der authentisch-böse Gesang spielt in gleicher Liga!
Insgesamt zeigen sich die Lieder auf “Doomsday” zwar nicht sonderlich abwechslungsreich oder innovativ. Lediglich das größtenteils langsame und teilweise auch schleppende “Stench Of Death” sticht in den knapp 23 Minuten Spielzeit besonders (und auch positiv) hervor. Aber wer modrigen Death Metal hören will, drückt gerne auch schon mal zwei Augen zu!
Verglichen zu all den Bands, die den frühen Schwedentagen nacheifern, sind HERPES fast schon erfrischend altmodisch – in eine andere Richtung. Fans von gaaanz alten Death, Autopsy oder Repulsion sollten HERPES eine Chance geben. Wer heute nichts mehr mit diesen Bands anfangen kann, wird auch an HERPES keinen Spaß haben. 

NOCTURNAL CULT Webzine (Usa)
The five song debut demo from these French death metallers shows a grimy reverence for all things old school.  Corrupted Flesh gets things underway with a bludgeoning of Stockholm styled death sewn together with early Death to form a putrid mixture of muddy gore.  Morbid Autopsy leads lurk in the foreground before the songs bursts with raging intensity until its final breath.  A pounding zombie of a beat pervades the early wanderings of Stench of Death, corpse-like vocals gurgle like a grave-beast rising from immortal slumber only to kill again.  Tumbling drums then announce a drunken banshee guitar solo as the track gallops towards its funeral march conclusion.  The title-track sounds like a brutalized meeting of Entombed and Unleashed after getting beaten about the hands and face by Chris Reifert.  Spinal Ashes lurches slowly about, like it is stricken with rigor mortis only to quicken its pulse and pace, as if sensing its living prey within its grasp.  Hungry riffs devour savaged flesh.  Frozen Funeral follows most of the album with bonesaw riffs and undead vocals.  However there are some synths that appear briefly for added eerie atmosphere not to mention the extended, jam-out guitar solos.  The production on Doomsday is a bit muddy and muffled at times but, hey, it's a demo!  If you worship all things ugly, brutal and morbid about old school death metal then Herpes will spread its disease ridden sores all over your body. 

NOCTURNAL HORDE Webzine (Denmark)
Welcome to the universe of the French Herpes - death, doom and destruction are what this is all about! This is their first demo, released on tape by Carbonized Cells and on CDr by the magnificent underground label Nihilistic Holocaust - if you wanna get a scent of what’s going on in horrific darkness, jump their way!
When the CD starts spinning, downtuned and dirty raw madness emerges from the speakers and the listener is intertwined in a doomy gloomy dark world of a gasping growl, raw guitar riffs, a rumbling bass and noisy drums, hidden just below the wall of guitar distortion and a heavy bass a little bit of control, in the controlled way. If you already haven’t thought Autopsy, this is the time - homage to the gods - without being a sad copy - this is wellmade and played death metal with intensity, darkness and passion!
I dig the 5 tracks on this demo and this is yet a band I will be looking forward to hearing more from! They have a nice take on doomy and dirty brutal death metal and the keys utilized on the last track ‘Frozen Funeral’ is working quite well, more of that please.

PANZERFAUST Blog (Pol)
One of the very few currently active French death metal bands, which I know, is Herpes, but actually until recently I only knew their name, never having a chance to hear the actual music. But since G from Nihilistic Holocaust was so kind and sent me a copy of their debut demo “Doomsday” I quickly gave it few spins and I must say that I really liked this demo. And I dare to say to say that all those, who like their death metal obscure and morbid, will also like it. And more so, if your favourite drummer is Chris Reifert, a favourite vocalist is Christ Reifert and fave bands are Autopsy and Abscess then Herpes will be your thing!
Yeah, when I started to listen to “Doomsday” I was like: “OK, it really reminds me Abscess… and Autopsy! Yeah, “Shitfun”… a bit of the new Autopsy album… and Abscess… cool!”. Maybe those resemblances are sometimes too obvious, on the edge of plain copycat, but I don’t actually care much about that, as long as the music is fine and it gives me some pleasure – but luckily it is not the pleasure in the anus area, but I’m talking about my head / ears. Ears, because I listen to some cool gruesome, filthy as hell music, with brutal, nasty sound, troglodytic riffs and vocals, which have been vomited, rather than sang… and head, because I can easily bang my skull while listening to “Doomsday” and definitely will not regret a second spent on it.
There are five songs on “Doomsday” and along with Autopsy / Abscess I can hear some influence from Master, Repulsion and in “Frozen Funeral” I even have some resemblance to Entombed, just listen to that guitar lead at the end… it has similar feeling to those filthy, punky Entombed songs, which they started doing ever since the release of “Wolverine Blues”. The whole demo is mainly played in mid paced tempos, with occasional faster but also doomy parts… it definitely has slightly primitive and almost garage feeling, which I also like, so in the end I can say that Herpes did a nice job on “Doomsday”.  70/100 

PITCHLINE Webzine (Spa)
Desde Francia llegan estos HERPES presentándonos su demo “Doomsday” del 2010 con 5 temas de death metal opresivo y oscuro de corte clásico. El estilo que practican realmente no es nada novedoso ni original sino que apuestan directamente por las estructuras más clásicas y típicas de bandas tales como INCANTATION, unos primeros ASPHYX con esos interludios más doomeros y lentos adornados con lóbregas melodías de guitarra, el macarrismo descarado de unos AUTOPSY/ABSCESS o incluso unos NECROS CHRISTOS sobretodo en lo que al apartado vocal se refiere. Desde mi punto de vista, su propuesta es más cercana al death metal europeo (nada que ver con el death metal sueco marca BOSS HM2) que al metal muerto de la zona de Florida.
No hay ningún tema a reseñar especialmente, pues todos mantienen una linealidad bastante homogénea y lógica dentro de los patrones del death metal clásico en los que se mueven. En ese sentido, no hay ningún “hit” a destacar sobre los demás aunque quizá el más sobresaliente de todos sea el segundo “Stench of Death” precisamente por ser el más variopinto de todos y el que incluye más cambios y dinamismo de toda la demo. El tema-título “Doomsday” también es bastante válido por el solo de guitarra bastante guapo que se marca … ¡Pierre-Yves? ¿Hans? Ni idea… cualquiera de los dos guitarristas. Mención aparte el tema “Frozen Funeral” que en su parte central hace gala de unos tristes teclados, mientras que el solo final me suena un poco cutre y triste (en el sentido de malo).
La presentación es correcta sin ser nada del otro mundo, en formato cd entero. Portada en blanco y negro, “libreto” fotocopiado y contraportada también fotocopiada, mientras que el plástico es un cd-r con una pegatina blanca en la que han escrito a boli (AZUL!!!!) “HERPES” y punto y final. Ni plástico envolviéndolo ni nada que se le asemeje, no hay bio, explicación alguna ni letras. En ese sentido, he visto demos bastante más curradas, sobretodo teniendo en cuenta la época en la que estamos. Joder, las demos en K7 molaban un huevo pero reconozcamos que el nivel de exigencia ha ido subiendo en los últimos años, máxime teniendo en cuenta la gran cantidad de competencia que está proliferando por doquier.
La nota cómica la pone el tal guitarra Hans… resulta curioso que los miembros de la banda aparezcan en las fotos con una relativa “seriedad” o “mala leche” - el bajista aparece en una montaña gritándole a la providencia; el cantante con el pelo tapándole por completo la cara – y el susodicho Hans sale sosteniendo una guitarra mientras pone cara de Kai Hansen en el video de “I Want Out” de Helloween, todo feliz y contento con una camiseta de Converse… después el resto de las fotos del libreto vuelven a ser todas en plan “chungo” y “qué malo soy”, al lado de unas ruinas con los brazos en alto y chillando o delante de un crucifijo en la contraportada.
No dispongo de datos acerca del lugar de la grabación de la demo aunque no suena nada mal… ¡suena… a … demo… qué cojones!
¡No está mal, pero muy mucho tendrán que currárselo si piensan editar un cd completo!  

PUTREFACTIVE EFFECT Blog (Fra)
A new act from North-West France into the arts of old skull deaf metal! Would I say that the stream is growing bigger (a bit like in Sweden), after AFFLICTION GATE, NECROS, NECROWRETCH, HERPES seems to be the latest graveyard spawn into old school death metal. The influences are obvious, nothing new from that side, but is that decently played and before, do they have the vibe that makes you shake the head, dig the grave and feast upon the corpse?
Well, for a first demo that's a satisfying start, the sound is crude (especially the drums) but good when it comes to other instruments. HERPES combines influences from the old releases of bands like DEATH, NIHILIST/ENTOMBED, AUTOPSY plus recent bands like DEATH BREATH (probably the most obvious approach) or even TRIBULATION (for the horrific side).
The tunes are good but hardly demarcate with the influences, HERPES shall found the personal touch to avoid being a vulgar tasteless clone. They have a cool rocking touch, and unleash great solos and other lead-guitars in the AUTOPSY (deep) vein, a good point though, dig it deeper in that ways you freaks!!

SHAPELESS Webzine (Ita)
Herpes è il nome di un gruppo francese proveniente dalla Lorena. "Doomsday" è il loro primo demo, autoprodotto, pubblicato da un'etichetta underground molto dinamica ed appassionata, sostenuta da anni da Shapeless Zine: le Nihilistic Holocaust di G.S.
La copertina di "Doomsday" è bianca, ed il disegno centrale ci mostra un intrico di mani, vene, volti e così via, sulla scia di tante illustrazioni provenienti dalle riviste horror o dai giochi di ruolo. Il libretto, di due pagine, contiene le varie foto dei musicisti, altre illustrazioni divertenti e macabre, teschi, e tutte le informazioni relative alla realizzazione di questo CDr (del quale sono in possesso della copia numero 83). Leggendo appunto tali informazioni, si scopre che questo demo era stato pubblicato originariamente in cassetta dalla Carbonized Cells. Inoltre, si ha modo di conoscere la formazione che ha inciso questo lavoro: Boww (batteria), Renaud (voce), Pierre-Yves e Hans (chitarre) e Clem (basso).
Il CDr è aperto da "Corrupted Flesh". Messa in moto da un'introduzione marcia e pesante, si apre ad un'accelerazione bruciante e coinvolgente, carica di tiro e potenza. Il suono d'assieme è davvero putrido, ribassato e memore del death metal dei tempi che furono, vale a dire a cavallo tra gli anni ottante ed i novanta. Attraverso cambi di ritmo, rallentamenti ed accelerazioni, gli Herpes riescono con successo nella loro "operazione nostalgia", suscitando magari una lacrimuccia in tutti quegli ascoltatori che hanno potuto vivere in diretta la nascita e gli sviluppi del death metal. Ogni tanto si avverte qualche indizio di melodia, ma si tratta appunto di indizi, nulla di più. C'è anche un bell'assolo, in questo efficace episodio di death metal diretto e semplice, non distante da certi Obituary.
"Stench Of Death" è una composizione oscura e negativa ai massimi livelli. Il gruppo, in questa traccia, cerca di mantenersi in genere su ritmiche lente e subdole, striscianti e torturanti. Il gutturale rozzo e rabbioso di Renaud è molto valido in tal senso, e rientra nei canoni del death metal più classico. Si segnala anche un'accelerazione piuttosto sostenuta, ma "Stench Of Death" è strutturata essenzialmente su ritmiche e riff strascicati e pesanti. Buon arrangiamento.
Ecco ora la title-track. Traccia molto agile e coinvolgente, è stata composta su uno o due riff principali, lievemente variati di volta in volta, che grazie ad una buona inventiva riescono a colpire nel segno. Interessante poi una sezione molto lenta e sinistra, vicina al doom, che mette i brividi e prepara la strada alla furia del passaggio successivo. Il ritornello è azzeccato. Ecco, nel caso di "Doomsday", poco importa che gli Herpes si esprimano in un linguaggio musicale anacronistico: la canzone è bella, e le composizioni belle sono senza tempo!
"Spinal Ashes" ripropone il consueto schema dell'introduzione lenta alla quale segue un'accelerazione decisa. Questa è la canzone più veloce di tutto il demo, e la doppia cassa di Boww sembra voler fare gli straordinari. Anche in questo frangente, gli Herpes non abbandonano la semplicità esecutiva e gli arrangiamenti essenziali. L'esecuzione è istintiva, e qualche imperfezione è perdonabile. Probabilmente il gruppo non ha passato mesi in studio, ma la cosa non disturba, anzi, è una garanzia di genuinità.
Non è certo l'ultima composizione, "Frozen Funeral", a cambiare le carte in tavola. Anche in questo caso, momenti più concitati si alternano ad altri più lenti e cupi. Indubbiamente, lo stile del gruppo è coerente con sè stesso, e per questa ragione non presenta sorprese. A parte una tastierina che integra l'arrangiamento in alcuni punti. E gli assoli melodici nel finale.
In conclusione, questo "Doomsday" altro non è che un sentito atto d'amore per il death metal dei tempi eroici. Nulla di più. In effetti, ogni passaggio di questo demo ricalca quanto fatto in ambito death metal da gruppi underground e non a cavallo tra gli anni ottanta e novanta. Se si trattasse della ristampa di un demo di quegli anni, non se ne stupirebbe nessuno (a parte per la qualità di registrazione, che qui è ovviamente migliore). Ragion per cui, il lettore deve decidere per conto suo se concedere una possibilità a questi francesi. Gli Herpes vogliono suonare questo genere di death metal, e non hanno alcun desiderio di essere originali od innovativi. Se foste degli appassionati di death underground, o dei nostalgici, "Doomsday" potrà fare per voi: gli Herpes infatti sono bravi e capaci. Se invece ricercaste un suono personale e qualcosa di nuovo, non accostatevi nemmeno a questo demo.
Tutto dipende dai vostri gusti e dal vostro approccio alla musica in generale. 6;5/10 

STAY PURE Zine (Macedonia)
HERPES isn’t something you would really like to interact with, but if you are a metal freak, you would DEFINITELY love to interact with the French band named that way! It was almost impossible avoiding these guys. Because of 2 reasons: ‘Carbonized Cells’ Zine & ‘Nihilistic Holocaust’ Distro! Firstly Julien and then Gab took ahead to promote their  French compadres to promote to the world. I waited long for this kind of good, possibly great, release!!! It’s the first and only stuff from ‘Herpes’, and with its own ups and downs, represents a descent start. Whiles listening to that death/punk lowed tuned, over gained guitars and drum section - you’ll only feel loose, free and damn right ENERGETIC! Put together, all of this sounds really, really dirty. It’s unavoidable, tasty and provocative. As a bonus you get the rockish solos that’ll make your day… After that you feel, hmmm, complete… It’s written that this represents traditional death metal, but no matter how you like traditional death, if you are a metal freak you won’t be disappointed. Highlights moment is ‘Spinal Ashes’!!! I have it on my distro on both formats, don’t hesitate to ask for it!* 

THE LEGION OF TCHORT Zine (Swe)
Here we have a real fantastic surprise from France with the bit exotic name Hepres, hehe. It is a brilliant debut demo I can say and consists five tracks of totally brainsawing ultra gore death metal in the same school of bands like Autopsy, Benediction, Nihilist, Obituary (early), Necrophagia to mention some. And there is nothing much to say about this demo more than it is a damn good debut by this band, a big salute to that. And sometimes it sounds even better than Autopsy that is the main influence here I guess. The sound has the typical dirty thing that makes it so pure raw, powerful and intense. Tracks that is a bit of extra here is the first one "Corrupted Flesh", "Stench of Death" and "Frozen Funeral". Other tracks "Doomsday" that is the title one is not bad either and then "Spinal Ashes" as well. And personally I love this kind of sound some bands have on drums, it is dirty, heavy and hammering and Herpes got it both in guitar and bass playing too. The whole demo has a very good quality all thru it, both in music and deliverance and the cover art gives you a thrill of true old school. Hope to hear much more from this band in the future.

THE SOUNDS OF THE LAW Webzine (Fra)
Grosse influence Autopsy tant sur le son typique et plein de basse, que sur le groove, les riffs et un peu la voix. Une touche de vieux death US style débuts de Death ou Master et c’est parti. La recette bien poisseuse, avec un petit coté punk (d beat), est éprouvée, elle a connue son heure de gloire au début des 90’s et connait un revival à croissance exponentielle depuis peu. Qu’est-ce qui différencie Herpes de son influence ? Un quart de poil de cul de Chris Reifert, soyons clair. A noter, ce n’est pas souvent le cas qu’on retrouve même les soli déjantés à la Danny Coralles (Autopsy), mais pomper jusqu’aux soli alors que les autres ne le font pas est-il vraiment une marque d’originalité ? Après les gars de Herpes sont clairs là-dessus et je suis tombé sur une intie où la pointe d’humour d’un « on écoute Autopsy tous les soirs avant d’aller se coucher » est révélatrice (colombo inside !). Ce ne sont pas les quelques secondes de clavier sur « frozen funeral » qui vont changer le verdict.
Là encore, si vous ne connaissez pas Autopsy, qui n’a pas eu la gloire qu’il méritait par rapport aux Death, Morbid Angel et autres compagnons de cette grande époque, je vous conseille évidement de vous plonger dans leur discographie. Au final, la « vénération attitude » pleine de conviction est là, l’esprit du death aussi et les compositions sont plutôt bien foutues (comme celles de Autopsy !). Les parties avec proto arpèges morbides sont bien réussies et je l’avoue, je me suis retrouvé, en fan du style, à taper du pied et hocher de la tête. Il se dégage ce qu’il faut d’ambiance morbide, de ce coté là pas de souci, et servie par un son sale plutôt bien adapté. A part la voix et les solo, le tout a été enregistré en condition live et cela ajoute à la touche morbide à l’instar d’Autopsy ou en prenant un autre groupe plus récent et enregistrant en condition live Karnarium (dont je vous le 1er album). J’approuve donc cette démo mais j’avoue que juste après je me suis mis un petit « act of the unspeakable », l’album d’Autopsy que je trouve le plus dérangé et malsain….Par contre plutôt que de me taper les derniers Abscess pour le coup je préfère cette démo…quand je ne suis pas en mode saturation du revival (rip off ?). 

THRASHOCORE Webzine (Fra)
On connaissait déjà les dingos d'Herpès de Crachat De Fillette mais là on va abréger en s'essuyant la salive et en se débarrassant du corps de la jeune salope pour ne garder que les cloques et les croûtes. Voilà donc Herpes tout court. Mais la comparaison s'arrête là, les deux groupes sécrétant des pus totalement différents. Difficile en effet de ne pas remarquer l'influence principale des Français tant celle-ci transpire par tous les pores. Et cette influence a pour nom Autopsy.

Jeune groupe formé dans le trou du cul de la France, plus précisément dans le fin fond de la Lorraine, Herpes sort cette année sa toute première démo en tape sur Carbonized Cells, rapidement rééditée en CD-R chez Nihilistic Holocaust avec un nouvel artwork moins enfantin. Cinq titres, un peu plus de vingt minutes, voilà ce que nous propose le quintette qui a dû bien écouter Reifert & Cie. On patauge donc en plein death metal old-school entre mid-tempo headbangants, séquences doomy écrasantes et accélérations entraînantes (et modérées, n'attendez pas de blast-beats). Mais que la mélasse du combo soit lente ou rapide, ça reste du 100% matière grasse renforcé par une production qui baigne dans la friture et où grouillent des guitares (accordées non pas dans les chaussettes mais carrément sous les pieds qui puent!) aux riffs poisseux et boueux ultra simples mais efficaces à mort. Pour dire, j'en ai encore les oreilles qui collent! Sensation accentuée par une bonne tartine de basse: ça ronfle, ça ronronne, ça vrombit, ça bourdonne et c'est tellement groovy que ç'en est presque rock 'n roll! On oublie pas non plus le chant excellent de Renaud qui, sans doute gavé par d'incessants allers-retours Manhattan-Kaboul à côté d'une pute rousse qui refoule de la moule, a décidé de se mettre au growl crasseux, contribuant lui aussi à l'aspect "sick" comme le fait si bien Chris Reifert.

Mais Herpes ne se repose pas uniquement sur ce groove downtuned visqueux. Les Français ont en effet la bonne idée d'accompagner leurs compositions non seulement d'une ambiance bien sombre mais aussi de quelques escapades solitaires. Si la plupart des leads font dans la mélodie sinistre ("Stench Of Death", "Doomsday", "Spinal Ashes") et les solos dans le chaotique et torturé ("Corrupted Flesh", "Stench Of Death", "Doomsday"), ils apportent quand même un peu de "lumière" et procurent davantage d'intérêt aux morceaux. On peut même remarquer un effort de construction sur le dernier titre "Frozen Funeral" avec un très bon solo plus mélodique que les autres. Ainsi que quelques nappes de claviers morbides brèves et discrètes mais bien placées!

En voilà une démo qu'elle est bien! Doomsday bénéficie en outre d'une durée parfaite. N'étant pas forcément le plus grand fan d'Autopsy qui soit (j'apprécie mais ne leur voue pas un culte comme d'autres) et préférant quand ça bourre un peu plus, ces vingt minutes s'avèrent suffisantes pour moi afin de ne pas éroder son efficacité. Cette première démo des Lorrains devrait en tout cas ravir tous les fans de death old-school groovy et poisseux à l'ambiance sombre et sale. Le revival battant son plein et Autopsy venant de se reformer, Herpes aurait bien un coup à jouer ici. C'est que ça donnerait presque envie d'avoir les couilles qui grattent tout ça! 3,5/5. Keyser.

French Death Metallers HERPES sent me their debute demo CDr, "Doomsday", and here are my thoughts.
HERPES really draws their influences from AUTOPSY and early DEATH. This is very clear from the beginning. The old-school underground feeling is very present during the entire demo. This I love! The sound is raw and brutal. The drums get punished furiously. The vocals is perfectly fitted in relation to the music, and the rest of the group does their work great.
Most bands get boring to listen to after a while, and since this is the first time I hear them, time will tell if they end up as "just another band", or really stand out. I see potential, but I don't see them doing anything really unique.
With that said, there is no doubt about that these guys are really competent musicians.
