    DOOM DEATH FROM SPAIN

-
Interview november 2024 -

1. Hello, what's up in the cold and moist cavern of doom?

Abel: Hello Gabriel, how are you? Everything is fine here, we are preparing for tomorrow's concert in Tarbes, together with Funeral Wisdom.

2. GOD'S FUNERAL is an underground death/ doom band from Spain which slowly but surely digs its hole in the cemeterial soil, as more condemned souls are exposed to the undertaker's spade with each new release... How would you briefly describe your music to someone who didn't attend the mass yet? Is it more about death metal or doom? Are you rather old school like the 80's or early 90's doom? Or is there more to be found in your coffin?

Abel: A quick description would be to say that we make Death/Doom quite slowly... We are influenced by the European Doom/Death of the 90's: Anathema, MDB, celestial Seassons, and by the death metal of that time: Bolt Thrower, Asphyx, Decomposed… And many more.
We have included some parts with a sound closer to black metal but basically we are Doom/Death.

3. I got some copies of your split CD with BOCC released by Brutal insanity records... I have to say this is a very cool release! My face and hears were subject to hard hittings of the shovel ahah! Who had the idea to gather both bands, and how did this happen?

Abel: We have been friends with Bocc for a long time, they are a great band and good people. I don't remember who had the idea, I think it was between Emilio, Bocc guitarist, and me. The truth is that we are very happy with the result, it has been a brutal release and it is moving very well, the vinyls are almost sold out.

4. This is a good idea to use violins for a doom band. On the first song "Omplint el cenotafi" it gives a very serious and severe feeling (à la early My dying Bride), on the third song "Enterrat viu" it sounds more beautiful and melancholic... Who did play these violin parts, is it a member of the band?

Abel: The violin is played by Núria, she has been with us since the Ballard/God's Funeral split. I have been thinking about using a violin for a long time, it fits the style very well, and it also gives it a classic touch very much in the style of the 90's.

5. Is this really a woman doing these low death metal growls on this new split Ep? I'm not always a big fan of women doing the death metal vocals, because they do not always reach the low frequencies (of death) so easily, but here I didn't notice a difference with man vocals... So what is her tip? Does she eat a bear in the coffee every morning? Ahah

Abel: The voices are mine, to this day I am a man... I think hahahaha.

(Editor's note: I think I have been misleaded by Metal archives’ precise infos ahah)

I do not use any technique when singing other than having consumed various substances in my youth, I may find that this helps to have the voice of a mating pig.

6. You seem to enjoy split releases, I see a good half of your discography is composed of splits with other bands (including Hadez, Bocc, Blazar and Ballard)... In your opinion, why is it better to release a few songs with another band, as opposed to a simple Demo/ Ep?

Abel: The truth is that splits are the format that I like the most, being able to share with other bands is great, I also think it is good when it comes to making the band known.
Another reason why we do so many splits is that we are too lazy to make a complete album… We have the album recorded, we are mixing it, we hope that it will be released next year.

7. What are your favorite My Dying bride releases? I'm personally more interested in their early more death metallic releases, and especially the "The Thrash of Naked Limbs" MCD... This is probably the release from them I listened to the most regularly...

Abel: "The Thrash of Naked Limbs" is one of my favorite recordings, along with the first album and the Trinity compilation... I haven't heard the last album, their last one I liked was "The Dreadful Hour".

8. If we are talking about ASPHYX, I guess you probably enjoy their first albums like "The rack" or "Last one on earth"... But due to the low pitched guitar sound, quite suffocating feeling and low guttural vocals, I think their album "Embrace the death" might be something a bit special for you? (I think these songs recorded with this more "bestial" feeling, disgusted vocals, and underground suffocating production bring a special atmosphere... Well, this was meant to be their first album but wasn't released at the time, perhaps it was "too underground" under some angles?)

Abel: I like all the Asphyx albums, the new ones a little less but the first 4 are essential in any collection. Holland released great bands in the 90s, Gorefest, Asphyx, Pestilence, Celestial Seasons...

9. Some doom bands sometimes taste like slowed down hard rock/ stoner, other doom bands are more like slowed down death metal... Which one do you feel the closer in the spirit? Is the doom always about the slowness of the beats?

Abel: In general I like slow music... but stoner is not one of my favorite styles, I like the first one from Kyuss and little else...
The styles I like the most are Doom/Death (Asunder,  Celestial Seasons, old Anathema), Funeral Doom (Mournful Congregation:The Fucking gods!!!, Ataraxie), and Sludge (Meth Drinkers, Grief, Peina Kapital)….

10. Is it good to listen to doom (the music) while playing to Doom (the game)?... Or perhaps it would be better to listen to Doom (the band) to play to this video game? ahah
Perhaps you would prefer listening to doom (the music) while playing to Wolfenstein 3D (The old game) which would be a bit more nostalgic/ horrific perhaps?

Abel: The truth is that I am not a fan of video games, when I was young I liked to listen to doom with a little weed and beer, I was better at smoking than playing the PlayStation.

11. A decade ago a lot of bands were into the brutality and were playing brutal death metal... But if we think about the brutality in the context of doom it is different... How would this materialize in this context in your opinion? What is "brutal doom" for you and which bands could represent this idea? (For me it could consist in very big riffs with enormous guitar chords, that hit your head severely like the shovel of the undertaker ahah... Something quite serious and severe sounding, without too much of melodies, but that still doesn't sound too extremely slow or drowning... But I don't drop names here, it's your "job" to answer...)

Abel: There are some bands that call themselves Brutal Doom, now Funeralium from France comes to mind, they make a very slow and very distorted death doom, without any type of melody. Khanate or Haggatha could also fit that description, although they add more variety to their music. I like those types of sounds for some part of the song, not for the whole time, I need melody and some change of rhythm for the music to hook me.

12. Everyone was surprised by the floods that attacked a part of Spain few weeks ago, including the town of Valencia. The waters were very violent, some houses were devastated and the cars were floating like balloons... I hope you weren't touched by this catastrophe... I read some towns of Spain are regularly attacked by great waters since centuries: "Disastrous floods have been reported throughout the history of Valencia, from the 14th century up to the contemporary period"... It's quite surprising to me, as far as I know Spain wasn't built on lands belonging to the sea (Contrary to Netherlands), so one might wonder the reasons of these recurring catastrophes...

Abel: Yes, it has been terrible, many people have lost everything, for now there are more than 200 dead peoples, in addition to almost 80 missing peoples...
I don't know what the reason is, one could be the political class we have in this country, everyone looks out for their own benefit, they have carte blanche to do whatever they want, another reason could be that peoples are idiots and vote for the first son of a bitch who gives them their ear...

13. Can you give us two "best of"/ playlists: The first for your favorite six TOTAL DOOM releases of all times... And the second for the last albums/ demos/ eps you listened to quite often the last weeks...

Abel: Doom list of all time could be:
Asunder - A Clarion Call.
Mournful Congregation - The Book of Kings.
Anathema - Silent enigma.
Meth Drinker - Oil.
Graves at the Sea/Asunder - split.
Grief- Come to grief.
This list may vary several times a day hahaha.

Lately I've been listening to:
Dantalion-Fatum
Blood Incantation- absolute elsewhere.
Nakkiga - Barneko beldurra.
Vilmort - demo III.
Peine Kapital- full lp
Asunder- any of their albums.
Some flamenco albums too and Spanish bands like Triana, Santa...

14. If we are currently in the middle of God's funeral, what would be the next step? A burning pagan barbecue? Do you believe another resurrection could happen?

Abel: The next step is the two concerts we have planned, then we hope to finish the mixing of the album... We are on the way to resurrection with the time it took us to release the first album, the band is 8 years old and still without an album, the average is not bad...

15. What are your next projects with GOD'S FUNERAL? Can we expect a new split release (ahah), new merchandising, or new gigs in the coming months?

Abel: Tomorrow we play in Tarbes and on the 15th we play at a festival in Barcelona with 11 other bands, Menhir Fest. As I said, we are mixing the new album, the pyramids were built in less time.
Believe it or not, we have a split that will be released before the end of the year hahahaha, it will be a split with the band Peine Kapital.
