It’s not very often that I come across metal compilations
still released on a cassette, as the case is with this split. Once again Nihilist
Holocaust brings us a gem of brutal underground death metal, and this time it
is in form of two bands; one American (Detroit, Michigan) Writhing and one French
(Bordeaux) combo - Ad Patres. It is a piece of old-school material, released
in the old-school manner and more importantly; with an old-school execution.
Each one of the aforementioned bands presents itself with three tracks of a
total death metal destruction.
First band to deliver their deadly attack
is Writhing. It has been described as ’20 minutes of kicking death metal with
American balls’. In my own words; I would say it is a smashing brutality packed
with some nice dual vocals (blend of metal growls and high-pitched screams)
and sometimes acoustic and mournful parts. Yet overall it is a brutal and deadly
death metal with blasting black metal passage, mid-tempo groovy parts, crushing
drums and monumental riffing. Their sound is much similar to the like of Grave,
Malevolent Creation, Morbid Angel, Suffocation and similar smashing brutal acts.
Second
band is Ad Patres. If you took everything from Writhing and add even more brutality
and madness then you’ll get Ad Patres. Their music is like a psychological warfare
that would inevitably harm weak souls. The vocals are ultra brutal (blend of
a typical death metal growls and high-pitched screams) yet with a technical
edge, the riffs are dark and diabolical while the drums are fast, chaotic and
aggressive as fuck. I like their profound guitar work and even more so a double-bass
drumming. It is intense and atmospheric at the same time; it’s like a dual brain-fuck.
This duality is maybe best exemplified with their probably best track ever "Scorn
Aesthetics", (listen below).
As for the production of both bands; it
has a very strong, powerful and professional sound to it. Both of these bands
are forces of bloodthirsty violence and this split demo represent both bands
in the best possible way. If you are into barbarous death metal then you won’t
get disappointed. This split-cassette is limited to only 500 copies, so make

le dernier à découvrir des jeunes groupes prometteurs (Heaving Earth, Entrails,
Impureza, Herpes), Nihilistic Holocaust fait encore des siennes avec une nouvelle
split tape regroupant les Américains de Writhing et nos compatriotes d'Ad Patres
dont ce cher Thomas Johansson nous avait déjà vanté les mérites il y a quelques
mois.
On commence avec Writhing, combo originaire de Detroit. Mais au lieu
de faire du rap, le quatuor a choisi de faire du death metal, et du bon! Formé
en 2003, le groupe m'était totalement inconnu. Il faut dire que Writhing est
resté plutôt discret jusque là, ne sortant qu'une démo en 2004, un EP en 2008
et un autre, Indomitable, cette année. C'est ce dernier qui a été utilisé pour
le split. Une bonne idée puisque sur ces trois titres, Writhing démontre des
qualités certaines. Marqué par la scène américaine des années 1990, notamment
la floridienne, le groupe pratique un death metal thrashy et evil qui poutre
sévère (ça blaste dès le début d'"Indomitable"...) tout en restant
varié (... mais pas que!). Pensez à Deicide pour les riffs sombres en tremolo,
le growl alterné aux shrieks et le côté diabolique, ainsi qu'à Malevolent Creation
pour l'aspect plus thrash. Quelques passages plus mélodiques viennent enrichir
les morceaux avec notamment une belle intro acoustique sur "Prey".
Le groupe y va aussi de ses solos chaotiques à la Slayer sur "Death Of
Your Dream". Mais ce sont les influences black metal bien senties qui surprendront
le plus sur l'excellent "Prey". Et si je vous dis que le tout est
emballé dans une production puissante et claire, même si on pourra toujours
chipoter sur la batterie triggée, vous comprendrez que Writhing, sans révolutionner
quoi que ce soit, a tout ce qu'il faut pour satisfaire les fans de death. Une
bonne découverte pour ma partie préférée du split et un potentiel prometteur
qu'on espère voir rapidement confirmé par une sortie à la durée plus conséquente.
Difficile de passer après Writhing mais Ad Patres a des arguments pour se défendre.
À commencer par une brutalité plus importante que chez Writhing, soutenue par
pléthore de blast-beats et une production impressionnante pour une démo. Les
trois morceaux de la partie française sont en effet issus du promo 2010, seule
sortie du combo à ce jour. Une sortie qui lui a suffit à se faire un nom dans
l'underground national. À juste titre puisque les Bordelais, formés en 2008
sous l'impulsion du batteur Alsvid (Seth, Fornication, ex-Enthroned) et où l'on
retrouve également l'ex-Withdrawn Olivier Bousquet à la guitare, ne font pas
dans la dentelle. Et comme Writhing, c'est le parfum de la scène US dont on
sent les agréables effluves, mais celles d'une frange plus extrême. Suffocation
n'est ainsi jamais loin, notamment sur "To The Fathers" et "Scorn
Aesthetics". On ressent également l'influence d'Aborted sur les parties
les plus bourrines et les tournures porcines que prend parfois le chant d'Axel
Doussaud. Pour ma part, je préfère quand il growle normalement. À noter qu'Ad
Patres a l'intelligence de ne pas servir que du blast en purée et sait aussi
varier les rythmiques et donner des atours plus mélodiques à sa musique, quoique
moins que Writhing, que ce soit par des riffs plus "aérés" ou des
solos de bonne facture. Moins convaincantes par contre, les influences modernes
comme ce passage saccadé à la double au début de "To The Fathers"
qui desservent la musique des Girondins. Heureusement, ces séquences se font
rares et la qualité des riffs, de la mise en place et du son, sans oublier la
brutalité qui fait du bien par où elle passe, font de cette deuxième partie
une réussite, même si je garde une préférence pour la première. Pour plus de
détails, je vous encourage à consulter la chronique détaillée de la bête par
mon confrère TJ. Nihilistic Holocaust nous sort donc un bon petit split ici
en nous présentant deux groupes de death metal à la fois suffisamment proches
et éloignés. Writhing s'avère une découverte intéressante avec son death aux
influences thrash et même black qui sait se montrer autant rugueux que varié
et mélodique. Confirmation pour moi en ce qui concerne Ad Patres. Je n'avais
lu que des compliments sur leur démo et les louanges étaient bien méritées.
Sans être exceptionnels ou novateurs, les Bordelais font montre d'un savoir-faire
certain dans l'art du bûcheronnage et devraient convaincre tout amateur de douceurs
sonores. Il n'y a plus qu'à attendre la suite pour chacun des groupes histoire
de confirmer toutes ces bonnes choses. Keyser. 3,75/5

This split came to me by way of G. from Nihilistic Holocaust.
He made a Dismember pun in the email, so I really hoped this split would
deliver. And it does. Writhing are from my hometown, holy crap,
and they play death metal. Their half of the split is aggressive and heavy,
with the right amount of guitar solos and cool drum fills. Their third
track, “Prey” makes me think of places cold and forest-y. Then again,
I know what Detroit is like, and this could make the perfect soundtrack for
a walk through an abandoned city. French split-mates and fellow
death metal Ad Patres fill up the other three spilt tracks. This is pretty dynamic
and I really enjoy it. Ad Patres is the band that opens for a huge tour
package, but is actually good. If I saw them live, I’d actually want to
listen to them and not groan in disbelief and walk outside. All three
of these songs are under 4 minutes, they’re fast, they’re interesting and they
don’t weigh you down with any bullshit. What can I really say about a split
between two solid death metal bands from opposite corners of the world? For
getting an e-mail from a tiny label containing a split by two unknown bands
(neither of whom have released a full length), I’d say this split delivers.
I’m looking forward to future releases from Writhing, Ad Patres and Nihilistic
Holocaust!
